The law requires all licensed contractors to pull a permit. A permit will protect the homeowner against unscrupulous and unsafe work conditions. A building official must approve the job by passing the mechanical, electrical and safety codes.
What is the right size air conditioner? Rule of thumb is 500 square feet of living space per ton of A/C. For example, if your home has 1,500 square feet of living space, it would need a 3 Ton A/C. Proper sizing and air flow are required in order to cool and dehumidify your home.
What happens if I install a larger A/C? Oversizing an air conditioner will cause rapid cooling. The unit will cycle on and off very quickly, not allowing the system to run long enough to dehumidify.
Will the new A/C work with my old ductwork? Chances are it will not work and will require modifications. Most old ductwork is undersized and must be enlarged in order to balance airflow. New A/C units are designed to move a lot more air in order to achieve their high SEER rating.
What happens if I don’t modify the ductwork? You’re A/C will be starved for air and will not operate properly. You will not achieve the manufacturers SEER rating and will waste a lot of energy. Your electric bills will not drop to their maximum because the A/C is not operating at 100% efficiency. You’re A/C will probably sweat profusely due to poor air flow restrictions.
Will the new A/C cool the back bedroom which is always hot? NO! It will not unless you increase the size of the ductwork to that room.
What size KW heater do you have in your A/C? There are three A/C heater sizes, a 5 KW heater, 7.5 KW heater and 10 KW heater. The higher the KW the larger the electric wire required from the fuse box to run your heat.
What happens if the wire size is not enlarged for a bigger heater? The wire could overheat and cause a fire.
Do I need an electrical permit? If the company is running any kind of wiring the answer is yes!
Do I need an Ultra Violet Air Purifier? YES! An ultra violet air purifier will kill bacteria and mold spores. New more powerful systems are even capable of purifying the air in your entire home and killing most viruses.
